Andy Warhol - "Cow" 1976There were 4 different color combinations of Warhol's "Cow" on wallpaper. One was published for an exhibition at Leo Castelli Gallery in 1966, one for an exhibition at the Whitney Museum in 1971, and this one for the Modern Art Pavillion in Seattle in 1977. It is one of only 100 prints of this image signed by Warhol himself. It was purchased by Pizza Shuttle from Sotheby's in June 2000 for a lot of "dough".
Pizza Shuttle adds Warhol cow to staffFrom the Journal Sentinel Warhol to dine by: The newest addition to the Pizza Shuttle restaurant is a cow. This is not just any cow - it's an Andy Warhol silk screen that the restaurant's co-owner, Mark Gold, bought through an online art auction at Sothebys.com. "I saw a picture of it in the New York Times and I thought, 'That would be cool for the restaurant,' " Gold said. The bidding started at $3,000 and Gold submitted the winning bid - $3,900 - in the last minutes. "By the time I paid the commissions and everything it was close to $5,000," Gold added. "It's appraised at $8,000." The print, simply called "Cow," was made in 1977 for an exhibition at the Seattle Art Museum, Gold said. Warhol used pinks and purples in the print, dedicated the work "To Claire," and signed it. Gold's original idea was to hang the print near the custard machine. But he was concerned it might be ruined there, so he hung it in the dining room instead. This isn't the first time Gold and his partner Louis Siecinski have jumped from pizza to the visual arts. Several years ago, they commissioned an artist to paint a copy of a Salvador Dali painting on the southern exterior wall of the East Side building.
